In Search of a Better Night's Sleep
Purchasing mattresses for your hotel property can present several challenges. Not only are you purchasing mattresses that will please your guests, but you must also comply with franchise requirements and stay within your budget.

A consumer poll conducted by The Better Sleep Council (BSC) found that “Americans felt a new mattress is a better investment in their health and happiness than a spa visit, a new television, or even a new car.” Obviously, quality of sleep represents a key priority. All of us are affected by proper sleep which impacts health, productivity, motor skills, and even memory. Keeping these invaluable functions in mind, you will realize that all guests, regardless of the purpose of their stay, will benefit from the comfort you provide.

Once the importance of investment in quality mattresses is realized, it is time to expose those hidden mattress components and how they impact your guests. The mattress is divided into three components: comfort layers which includes all the material on top of the springs, support systems including the inner springs or foam core and foundation or box springs which provided the structural support for the mattress.

Comfort Layers

Comfort layers generally consist of an insulator, upholstery and quilting. The insulator may include either a fiber pad or mesh barrier. The purpose of this layer is to distribute weight evenly throughout the mattress while preventing layers of cushioning from entering the coil system. High quality cushioning in the upholstery and quilt layers will contour to the body to alleviate pressure points and allow for a comfortable, restful sleep.
Although all comfort layers add to the depth of a mattress, they vary greatly in level of quality. Understanding the composition of comfort layers materials helps ensure the level of product quality that will maintain comfort, shape and resiliency. High density polyurethane foam has proven to be one of the most resilient and cost effective ways to build a product that will last, with minimal reduction in firmness and limited body impressions.

Support Systems

Support systems are directly underneath the comfort layers and may consist of an innerspring unit or specialty products that may include air, water, foam or latex. Innerspring mattresses continue to be the most popular and cost effective option for many properties.

Mattresses purchased for the hospitality industry should also have additional perimeter or edge support. Reinforced perimeters will limit break-down which occurs when guests sit on the edge of the mattress. Steel or foam edge guards can also help reduce break-down.

Foundation

The foundation is what supports the mattress and the quality of the foundation has a direct correlation to how well the sleep system will perform and maintain over the years of use. There are different foundations commonly used in hospitality, they are: 1) A wood box covered in fabric that matches the mattress, 2) a steel support that is mounted to wood or steel or a “true box spring which is a coil unit mounted to a wooden or steel frame. This is by far the foundation of choice due to the fact that the coil unit acts as a shock absorber resulting in the longevity of the mattress.

“Greener” Technology

On July 1, 2007 the Federal Government mandated strict fire retardant standards for mattresses. This new fire code, 16 CFR Part 1633, is the most stringent requirement for mattresses and supersedes all previous codes. Barriers can consist of boric acid, formaldehyde or other dangerous chemicals. While some feel that this is the only choice, others have opted for a much safer procedure using a barrier with natural fibers that are inherently fire retardant.
